A Fast World: 3 Simple Strategies to Avoid Feeling Overwhelmed: Wisdom from Nature and Farming

Today’s world moves very fast. We get messages all day. We have many meetings, goals, and expectations. It feels like we must always be doing something and doing it fast. This speed can make us feel tired, stressed, and lost. But nature teaches us a different way. Farmers do not rush. Trees do not grow in one day. Everything good takes time, care, and rhythm. Here are three simple and powerful strategies to help you stay calm and strong even when life moves quickly.

  1. Take Care of One Thing at a Time

Farmers do not try to plant every field in one day. They choose one piece of land, prepare it, plant the seeds, and care for it. Then they move on to the next. Trying to do too many things at once leads to stress and poor results. Keep in mind that “You can do anything, but not everything.” David Allen. How about trying this:

  • Each day, choose your top three important tasks.
  • Focus on one task at a time.
  • At the end of the day, take a moment to celebrate what you finished.

Even small steps add up to big progress.

  1. Grow Your Roots First

Big trees have strong roots under the ground. These roots take years to grow before the tree becomes tall and strong. Bamboo, for example, grows its roots quietly for several years. Then suddenly, it shoots up very fast. An African Proverb says: “Rain does not fall on one roof alone.” Before you try to grow quickly, take time to build strong habits and inner strength. You do not need to rush. Slow growth is often the most powerful. Try this:

  • Start your day with a quiet moment (a short walk, deep breathing, writing, or prayer).
  • Eat well, rest enough, and take care of your body.
  • Make daily routines feel special and meaningful.

You are not a machine. You are a living being. Care for yourself.

  1. Respect the Seasons of Life

Nature has seasons. There is a time to plant, a time to grow, a time to wait, and a time to harvest. You cannot force summer to come in the middle of winter. Many people feel overwhelmed because they try to do everything, all the time. But your life also has seasons: times to act, and times to rest. As the Bible put it in Ecclesiastes 3:1–2 “To everything there is a season… a time to plant, and a time to reap.”

Try this:

  • Ask yourself: “What season am I in right now? Is it time to push forward or time to slow down?”
  • Do not compare your life to others. You may be in your winter, while they are in their spring.
  • Trust that your season will change. Be patient.

Finally, Choose Peace Over Speed: The world may push you to go faster, faster, faster. But you can choose a better way. Choose to live with rhythm, with care, and with purpose. “The seed does not shout to grow. It grows in silence.” You do not need to rush to be valuable. You only need to root yourself deeply in what matters. Breathe. Slow down. Begin again
